Building your Reputation


You don’t build a reputation by churning out facts or putting on a suit. A reputation is built through walking the talk.

The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.

If building your reputation is one of your goals for your newsletter (blog, social media), here are some suggestions for content that will achieve that.

Share success stories
Use narratives, graphics, photos, videos. Give your readers a taste of what success feels like. Create showcases and galleries. Summarize case studies and research. Tell about lessons learned.

Solve problems
Apply your skill and experience to help people solve real problems. Give time-saving tips. Create how-to instructions and checklists. Answer questions.

Give insight into your area of expertise
Stay current with trends, news, and innovations. Curate and summarize information appropriately for your readers. Share your opinions. Get interviewed and republish the resulting articles.

Know the right people
Interview well-known experts or celebrities. Solicit articles for your newsletter. Get those experts to publish your work in their newsletters. Share insider information.

Encourage others to endorse you publicly
Request testimonials and also gather those spontaneous ones from social media and email exchanges. Show them off in your newsletter, as well as on your website.

A positive reputation is one of our most valuable business assets. Invest time to cultivate yours.

How to Publish a Newsletter without Writing

There are two things that usually keep someone from starting a newsletter. One is compiling their first mailing list. The other is: "But I can't write very well!" There are ways to publish a newsletter without having to do a lot of writing. #1. Come up with the ideas and prepare an outline. Then delegate or hire someone to do the writing for you. #2.   Curate content . That means researching and gathering content from other sources that you then share, giving appropriate credit. This model is used by online publishing empires like Huffington Post and Smart Briefs. Search for content online or set up Google Alerts for your keywords. #3. Solicit content from other experts serving the same target market. Using a model of guest contributors , offer the opportunity for writers to get in front of your audience. This is worth getting excited about - the best kind of content possible. That’s because content that saves you time also helps you meet so many other goals . How can taking the time to create content actually save you time? Well, you create content out of all the communication you do on a regular basis. You know, like when you write an email to explain something to a new client that you’ve already explained dozens of times in the past to previous clients. Your message becomes routine, maybe even boring, for you and your client. So why not prepare a succinct, compelling version of it to share with new clients? "My newsletter isn't doing anything for me." Over the years I've heard many different versions of this same sentiment, usually accompanied by a big sigh. A month or so later, the newsletters stop. A newsletter does not make a marketing plan. And sending out a newsletter is only a small part of a content marketing strategy . To be successful, there are other related things you need to be doing. If You Pay Attention to Your Headline, It will Get Attention

When a client mentioned CoSchedule's Headline Analyzer , I hopped on over to check it out. (Thanks Natasha!) Here's the promise I found there: "The free blog post headline analyzer will score your overall headline quality and rate its ability to result in social shares, increased traffic, and SEO value." My initial thought was that it would have to be run by algorithms so its value would be limited. But my skepticism turned to enthusiasm with my first use. The rather mechanical breakdown of my proposed subject line was detailed and looked at different success factors. The Headline Analyzer was useful to help me brainstorm alternatives and especially to consider options I wouldn't have otherwise devised. I think success came partially from paying more attention instead of rushing to publish. Crello is Not Just Another Pretty Graphics Tool

If you're frustrated with trying to use Canva , this might be the solution for you. The interface is very much like Canva, yet Crello has veered away in the right places. I've always found the way Canva handles images as backgrounds and layers to be awkward; Crello takes a more simplistic approach. Crello has 6,000+ free templates and 10,000+ free design elements! I know that's going to be exciting to many besides me. Crello lacks some of my favourite Canva features, especially magic resize. But its ease of use and more intuitive interface is winning me over.
